EDU 570

I have attended many online courses in route to attaining my Masters in Educational Technology.  Due to this, I was very familiar with the participation aspect and the process of participating in online discussions.  This class was unique, because it was both on-campus and online.  I will reflect on both of the aspects of the class.

In regards to on-campus class participation, I was present and on time to every class.  In relation to discussions at these classes, I feel I was very much a part of the positive discussions that occurred.  I contributed to every critical incident discussion in a way that was respectful and positive.  I feel I was able to focus on the discussions and was not distracted from the important discussions that were occurring.  I also participated in all online discussions.  I posted responses to our discussion questions, responded to posts made by my classmates, and readily responded to anyone asking questions or for clarification from me.  Proof of this can be found in the multi-faceted discussion I had with other students in the High-stakes testing forum.  Part of class participation is handing in all assignments on time.  I submitted all of my assignments in a timely manner.

I feel I showed great professionalism during this seminar.  I kept up on all the readings, and used some information in these books and articles to strengthen my discussion points.  Outside of this class, but during this semester, I sought membership in many educational organizations.  I became part of the technology plan committee and the math text selection committee.  I have also applied for membership in the National Science Council.

It’s imperative that students share ideas in a respectful manner.  I feel that, even when in disagreement with another student, I was able to stay respectful with my fellow students.  During on-campus classes, I was able to pay attention to whoever was speaking, and to respond only after giving thought to what I wanted to say.  During the critical incident discussions, I was able to offer ideas based on my personal experiences.  For example, I gave ideas to a student having difficulty with a math program that I had also experienced problem with.  When I present my critical incident this Saturday, I will be sure to be respectful to ideas and to present my material with the utmost respect to my instructor and classmates.

In review of my participation in this class, there are two things in particular that I would improve on in the future.  First, while my discussion posts were submitted on time, they were often times submitted at the last minute.  Due to this, not all students had the opportunity to read and respond to my posts.  In order to include a greater number of people in my discussions, I would post earlier in the future.  Second, while my discussion posts were written with the articles in mind, I didn’t quote the articles as much as I could have.  By adding more quotes in the future, I would provide better evidence to support my opinions.
