Child Study Team A group of school professionals who meet for the purpose of making programming decisions concerning children.
Initial Evaluation Tests and other assessment procedures that are used to decide eligibility for special education services.
Planning and Placement Team (PPT) An interdisciplinary team of educators and parents that meets to make evaluation, diagnostic or programming decisions concerning handicapped children or those children suspected of having a handicapping condition. This team may also include other individuals who have knowledge or special expertise about the child.
Referral Form A comprehensive form, usually completed by a child's parent or teacher, to document concerns and current performance levels of the student. It may also include strategies used to improve classroom performance.
Accommodations Use of technology, or other means, to accommodate special needs of a student within the regular classroom, in order for him/her to complete the same assignments.
Assistive Technology Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Screen Rating scale, usually completed by parents and teachers, to document specific behaviors in determining the risk factors for ADHD.
Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) Screen Assessment tool used to determine levels of auditory processing and if the brain is interpreting incoming sounds correctly.
Eligibility Based on initial evaluation, the decision that a child is eligible for special education.
Goals/Objectives Individual goals and objectives written by special education and related service staff as part of the IEP.
Individual Education Plan A plan written by the PPT that describes in detail your child’s special education plan.
Modifications A comprehensive list of classroom and curriculum modifications necessary to facilitate the success of a student receiving special education services within the regular education setting.
Percentile Rank A particular group of scores. A percentile rank between 25 and 75 is considered average.
Procedural Safeguards A copy of this pamphlet will be provided to you when your child is referred for an initial evaluation or being reevaluated. Other times you may receive this information include when you are invited to a PPT, a due process hearing is requested, or a change in your child’s program is being made.
Standard Scores Valid and reliable scores from standardized measurements. The set of scores always have the same mean and standard deviation. Scores ranging from 85-115 are considered within the average range.
Triennial Evaluation A complete re-evaluation of a child currently receiving special education services, completed every three years.
